I'm here to play hard platforming levels, not tediously explore every nook and cranny of every level for hours on end hoping I stumble into a heart.

And I wouldn't care if they were just there to be an extra meaningless collectible like the strawberries, but the fact that you need every damn one of them to access 8b, which also means you need all of them to access all the c-sides, is really a load of bullshit in my opinion. This goes past simple exploration and puzzle solving, it's like the devs deliberately don't want you to find these. Chapter seven they make it pretty clear what you need to do, but replaying the level over and over looking for every different item is tedious. Chapter to you have to abuse a game mechanic they never teach you. You were supposed to figure out an already relatively cryptic puzzle in chapter one, and then I guess you were supposed to right it down just in case? Who would do that? Chapter four requires you to have played a 30 year old game and remember a reference to it. I didn't even know these hearts existed until I stumbled upon the torch room in chapter 6 and looked it up. I struggle to understand how anyone finds any of these organically.
